| 166 | Aberdeen Press and Journal 23 April 2001 p. 9b-d Tributes pour in after duke dies by Fergus Macneill The head of one of the most powerful and influential families in Britain has died aged 63. Ian Campbell, the 12th Duke of Argyll and Scotland's second most senior duke, suffered heart failure during surgery at a London hospital, according to reports. He leaves a wife, Iona, and a son Torquhil Ian, Marquess of Lorne, and a daughter, Lady Louise Iona Campbell. Torquhil will now become the 13th Duke of Argyll. Last night, tributes poured in for the duke and workers at the family's historic seat of Inveraray Castle, in Argyll and Bute, were said to be shocked at the news of his death. Paying tribute to the duke, Ray Michie, the Liberal Democrat MSP for Argyll, said: "The people of Argyll and Bute will beshocked to hear of the untimely death of the duke. "He had become a familiar figure in his role as Lord Lieutenant travelling the length and breadth of the country - in particular his support for the Highland Games in Oban and Inveraray will be greatly missed." The Duke of Argyll was born in 1937 and educated at Le Rosey, Switzerland; Trinity College in Glenalmond and McGill University in Montreal. He enjoyed a varied and diverse business background, having been a strockbroker in New York and a captain in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He also worked at the London branch of the First National City Bank and was an assistant personnel manager at the Xerox Corporation. Also known as MacCailein Mor, upon his father's death in 1973 he succeeded as the 12th Duke of Argyll and Chief of the Clan Campbell. But his seat, Inveraray Castle, suffered a disastrous fire in 1975 from which he mounted a successful worldwide campaign to help restore the castle. Yesterday the flag at Inveraray Castle flew at half-mast as a mark of respect and a worker at the castle said staff were still coming to terms with the news. FRIENDLY The duke's family were said to be travelling up to their home later yesterday. Commenting on the death of the duke, Ian Gillies, the factor of the 20-mile Tiree Estate and local Tiree councillor, stressed the duke had been friendly and approachable. Mr. Gillies, who had worked on the estate for the past 30 years, said: "He was a man that had a whole range of interests and was very interested in people. "He was a very personable chap. I found him to be a very decent and honourable man as an employer. It is obviously very sad to hear this news." The duke's widow, the Duchess of Argyll, Iona Colquhoun, is the only daughter of Captain Sir Ivar Colquhoun of Luss, the eighth baronet and Chief of the Clan Colquhoun. The duke's sister, Lady Jean, is married to a South Carolina planter. Hereditary offices include Master of the Royal Household in Scotland; Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland; Admiral of the Western Isles; Keeper of the Royal Castles of Carrick, Dunoon, Dunstaffnage and Tarbert; High Sheriff of Argyllshire; member of the Queen's Bodyguard for Scotland, and member of the Royal Company of Archers. Kenny Maclachlan, 52, who runs the Scottish Heather Shop in Inveraray at which the duke and duchess sometimes shopped, also paid tribute to the duke's character. He said: "The duke and the duchess shopped just like everybody else. They came to town to get what they needed; they did not get any special attention because they did not look for it. "I knew him as well as anyone could know a duke. He was very nice and very pleasant. He was just a normal guy." The duke's titles also include Lord Lieutenant of Argyll and Bute; Lord Campbell; Earl of Argyll; Marquess of Kintyre and Lorne; Viscount of Lochow and Glenyla; Lord of the Inveraray, Mull, Morven and Tiree, and Baron Hamilton of Hameldon. | CAMPBELL, Ian Duke of Argyll (I9)
