| 742 | Morning (London) Post 2 December 1863 p. 5f The marriage of Major the Hon. Augustus Henry Archibald Anson, V.C. (second surviving son of the late Earl of Lichfield), with the daughter of the Rev. Thomas Legh Claughton, vicar of Kidderminster, honorary canon of Worcester, and formerly professor of poetry in the University of Oxford, was solemnised yesterday at Kidderminster with universal rejoicings. The bride's mother is the Hon. Julia Susannah, daughter of the Rev. William Ward, 10th Baron Ward, and sister of the present Earl of Dudley. The town was a scene of festivities in which Dissenters no less than Churchmen joined, the vicar, though firm in his Churchmanship, being universally beloved for his liberality and tolerance. Kidderminster was decorated with garlands, arches, and flags. The Mayor proposed an address to the vicar from the Town Council, and a present to Miss Claughton; and the children of St. Mary's Schools presented her with a Bible, while her own Sunday class gave her a Prayer-book. Various other demonstrations of goodwill were shown to the family. The bride was attended by eight bridesmaids - the Hon. Lucy Lyttelton, Miss Pearce, Miss Ward and Miss Henrietta Ward, Miss Katherine and Miss Lucy Claughton, Miss Edith Montgomery, and Miss Hemming. The service was performed by the Right Rev. Dr. Morrell, Coadjutor Bishop of Edinburgh (a former curate of Mr. Claughton's), and the Rev. C.J. Mottram, incumbent of St George's, Kidderminster. The wedding breakfast took place at the vicar's residence, Summer-hill, at which 40 guests were present, including the Earl of Dudley, Lady Ward, the Earl and Countess of Lichfield, Lord Elcho, M.P., and Lady Elcho, Mr. W. J. Legh, of Lynne, M.P., and Mrs. Legh, Mr. G. Greenall, M.P., the Bishop (Coadjutor) of Edinburgh, the Hon. Adalbert Anson, the Mayor of Kidderminster, the Rev. H.A. Woodgate, B.D., honorary canon of Worcester, and Miss Eleanor Woodgate, the Rev. E.W. | 743 | Morning (London) Post 29 April 1847 p. 6B DEATH OF THE DUKE OF ARGYLL We regret to state that this venerable nobleman expired on Monday morning last at his seat Inveraray Castle. The Noble Duke our readers will recollect, has suffered for some weeks past from a bodily complaint, but had partially recovered. Some days back he, however, experienced a fatal relapse, and died as abovementioned. He was attended in his last moments by the Duchess of Argyll, the Marquis and Marchioness of Lorne, and other members of his family. The deceased nobleman, John Douglas Edward Henry Campbell, Duke and Earl of Argyll, Marquis of Lorne and Kintyre, Earl of Campbell and Cornal, Viscount and Baron, &c., in the Peerage of Scotland, and Baron Sunbridge and Hamilton in that of Great Britain, was born December 24, 1777, being the son of the celebrated Field-Marshal the fifth Duke of Argyll by the second daughter of John Gunning, Esq., of Castlecoote, Roscomon, and widow of James sixth Duke of Hamilton. In his earlier years the subject of this notice, then a junior member of the noble house of which he died the representative, entered the army, and served with some distinction under his late Royal Highness the Duke of York and the celebrated Sir Ralph Abercrombie. On retiring from a military life he entered the political world, and was returned as the representative of his native county, with which his connection did not cease until a period of more than twenty years had expired. From the time of his retirement from the Lower House in 1821 down to that of his elevation to the Peerage he led a retired life, and resided chiefly on his estates in Dumbartonshire. In 1839, on the death of his brother, the fifth Duke he succeeded to the title and estates of this important branch of the Campbell family. In politics the deceased nobleman was a Conservative, and for many years opposed all changes with regard to agricultural protection. In the dispute between the members of the Church of Scotland, it will be recollected, he took a most prominent part, and introduced a Bill on the subject, which, however, did not become law. As a patron of literary and scientific societies the Duke of Argyll was well known, and his loss in this respect will be much felt. He was a Fellow of the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh, and was a member of various other institutions. He was Heritable Master of the Queen’s Household, Keeper of the Great Seal and of the official regalia of Scotland, &c., Keeper of Carrick and Dunstaffnage Castle, and Colonel of the Argyll and Bute Militia. The late Duke married three times, viz., first, August 3, 1802, Eliza, eldest daughter of William Campbell, Esq., of Fairfield, Ayrshire, by which lady, who died in 1818, he had no issue; secondly, in 1820, Joan, only daughter and heiress of John Glassell, Esq., of Long Niddvy, East Lothian, who died in 1828; and thirdly, in 1831, Anne, eldest daughter of John Cunningham, Esq., who survives, and who never left his Grace from the moment his complaint attacked him. The deceased had issue by his second marriage John Henry, born in 1821; died in May 1837. George Douglas, Marquis of Lorne, born in April 1823. This young nobleman, who, as our readers are aware, married in 1844 Lady Elizabeth Leveson Gower, eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland, has already in public given promise of a brilliant career, and of being a worthy successor to his respected father. Lady Emma Augusta, born March 12, 1825, and Lady Elizabeth, who died young. The family of Campbell is one of the most distinguished in Scotland. In 1445 one of its members first became a Peer by the title of Baron Campbell. The Dukedom bears date 1701, and the English honours 1776. The family estates lay in Argyllshire, Dumbartonshire, and Haddingtonshire. | CAMPBELL, John Douglas Edward Henry Duke of Argyll (I53)

| 749 | Nevada State Journal 3 August 1969 p. 58c-d Terry Schaertel Glen Campbell: How a Country Boy Survives Stardom He was late. His hotel suite was in confusion. His mangers were making muffled phone calls to locate him. Fifteen minutes later he rambled in - big Glen Travis Campbell in a big green suit, abundant blond hair, holding a big cigar. After and enveloping handshake, he headed immediately to the amplifier, fiddled intently with the dials, picked up a guitar, and absent-mindedly stummed some random sounds. Glen Campbell, the country-boy star in the hectic world of tv, music, and movies is anything but hectic himself. He has about as much hustle and bustle as a stroller on the main street of his home town of Delight, Ark. "Delight is just a little town of 290 people, last I knew. Everybody knows everybody. We lived eight miles out on a farm." (Strum, strum) Glen says that a guitar at least gives him something to do with his hands, and he punctuates his comments with strums. Glen got married when he was only 17. "Didn't last long," he admits. "A conflict of personalities. I was too young." There was a daughter, Debbie, 9, from that marriage. She spends summers with Glen and his present family. At 21, he married Billie Nunley. He met her while playing with his own band in Albuquerque. "Perhaps you were more ready for marriage this time?" I suggested. "Not much," he laughed. "My wife is a great person, though. Sensitive, a great mother and wife. She's a gas!" (Strum, strum). The Campbells live in Laurel Canyon above Los Angeles in the same "nice little house" they have had for four years. Glen spent most of that time accompanying other singers and doing a few of his own releases for Capitol Records. None, however, caused much of a stir. Then in 1967 he became a smash with "Gentle on My Mind." Its success made Tom Smothers aware that his tv program's guitarist had a voice and would be a worthy summer replacement for the Smothers Brothers show last year. Today Campbell has his own CBS-tv show which will resume its second year come September. He also has been signed to make six movies. In the first, "True Grit," he costars with John Wayne, a boyhood idol. "I used to pick cotton to get the money for all his movies," Glen said. Glen's and Billie's children, Travis, 3, and Kelli, 7, are being raised "different, not better, than the way I grew up," he says. "I think Mom and Pop did a good job. I'd like my kids to grow up where I did - the sticks. They'd get a much better outlook on life than in Los Angeles." He himself never finished high school and regrets it now. "But," he adds quickly, "ever since I can remember, this here guitar (strum, strum) was all I ever knew. My father got me a mail-order one when I was four. I was on the radio, regular, by the time I was six." Glen is 30, right on that "don't-trust-anyone-over-30" borderline. But his fans are in all age groups. "They look at life so differently. When they stop me on the street, I like to ask them what they think." Recently a third child, Wesley, was born. Like the other children, Wesley's not being baptized. Says Glen, "We'll wait and let them pick their own religion." His only comment on the new arrival: "He's a gas." Strum, strum. | CAMPBELL, Glen Travis (I614)
