Duke wants to sell but sons say ‘No’ The Duke of Argyll’s two young sons are opposing him in a petition to the Court of Session for permission to sell part of the family estates. The sons are Ian Campbell the Marquis of Lorne, 17, and eight-year-old Lord Colin Ivar Campbell. Their address is 79, East 79th -street, New York. | 846 | The Advocate (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) 9 June 1997 p. 9a American-descended duchess dies by the Associated Press Paris. Mathilda, the American-descended Duchess of Argyll, an ancient Scottish clan, has died in Paris at the age of 71. She died Friday, an obituary notice in Le Monde said. The cause of death was not given. London's Daily Telegraph said she had been in poor health, and for the past three years remained in Paris. Mathilda Costner Mortimer was born August 20, 1925, in Geneva, the daughter of Stanley Mortimer of Litchfield, Conn. She was raised in France by her grandparents and then studied philosophy at Harvard. Divorced in 1961 from her first husband, Clemens Heller, a professor of human sciences in Paris, she married the 11th Duke of Argyll in 1963. Together they enjoyed traveling and Highland dancing and gave lavish parties at the Argyll family seat, Inveraray Castle, in the Scottish county of Argyllshire. After the duke's death in 1973, the duchess kept her homes in France and Scotland. As well as French and English, she spoke fluent German, kept up intellectual interests and privately published a collection of essays and the memoirs of the youngest of three sons from her first marriage, who died in 1974. Four years ago, she enrolled at Britain's Open University for a science foundation course. The duchess is survived by two sons. In 1967, she and the duke had a daughter, Elspeth, who lived only six days. Funeral services will take place at Vezelay in central France on Wednesday, Le Monde said." | MORTIMER, Mathilda Coster Duchess of Argyll (I24)

Campbell, $20 only as he has withdrawn himself from me." Executor: Charles J. Morse, Washington, D. C.; Will was probated 4/27/1838. Witnesses: Benjamin K. Morsell, Sarah Bryan, John D. Clark. Will Book 5, pp. 51-52 (54-65); O.S. 2102; Box 14. [Note: John's age at death is given as 64, thus making his date of birth 1774. But if he married in 1789, he would have been only 13 years old. This age may have been an error. Perhaps his age at death was actually 74 thus making his dob 1764. His age then when married in 1789 would have been 23 -- a much more realistic figure. But this is merely an educated guess. RGC] | CAMPBELL, John (I344)

| 850 | The following transcription of a historical newspaper article contains terms considered derogatory and inflammatory today. Highland (Doniphan County, Kansas) Vidette 7 February 1901 p. 1c Fatal Shooting on Reservation Two weeks ago at a dance on the Iowa and Sac reservation west of White Cloud, Joe Deroine shot Murray Campbell with a revolver, the ball entering the stomach and passing through the lung. A week later Campbell died as a result of the wound and his assailant has skipped the country. The two were quarter-breed indians, Campbell being regarded a peaceable fellow while Deroine was given to drink and to regarding himself with awe as a bad Indian when stirred up. On this occasion there was litte provocation for the shooting as Campbell had mere attempted to induce Deroine to cease being quarrelsome. Deroine, who is now at large and guilty of the crime of murder, is the young fellow who married Miss Lela Whittaker of Falls City a white girl who came to the reservation some time ago to do missionary work among them. This is the third murder committed on the reservation or by members of those tribes within the past year. One Indian was found by the road side with his throat cut from ear to ear. Another shot a prize fighter while in a billiard room in White Cloud and is not serving out his sentence in the penitentiary. | CAMPBELL, Murray A. (I291)
