Janet Kidd, socialite and 'Beaverbrook Girl'

London (AP) - Janet Kidd, socialite daughter of the first Lord Beaverbrook, the Canadian-born newspaper magnate and politician, has died at the age of 80, her family reported Tuesday.

Mrs. Kidd died Friday at her home in the village of Ewhurst 25 miles southwest of London. No cause of death was given.

In 1987, she published "The Beaverbrook Girl," a lively volume of memoirs about her active and adventurous life, which included horse breeding and flying helicopters.

She was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Max Aitken and his first wife, Gladys Drury.

In 1910, her multimillionaire father brought the family to live in England, where he became a Conservative Party legislator and in 1916 bought the Daily Express, turning it into a major national newspaper.

He was made a peer with the title of Lord Beaverbrook in 1917. In World War II he served as ministerof aircraft production and later minister of supply.

Janet Kidd grew up surrounded by celebrities, including writer Rudyard Kipling and politician Lloyd George.

She met her first husband, Ian Campbell, a compulsive gambler and heir to a dukedom, in the casino at the fashionable French resort of Le Touquet. Married in 1927, they were divorced in 1934.
