Another hero departed -- John Campbell, a revolutionary soldier of '76, died at Middletown on the 16th inst., aged 78 years. Mr. Campbell was a patriot and sustained through life the character of an honest man. His remains were followed to the grave on Tuesday by the Middletown Rifle Company, under the command of Capt. J. W. Grove, and a large and respectable concourse of citizens and friends. After the usual salute from the soldiers, an impressive prayer was offered by L. Myers, succeeded by an appropriate address by S. Kercheval, St. Esq. --Winch; Repub. [3]

Will names "daughter Julia C. Godwin, $2000; Ann, widow of son Archibald Campbell, $1000, to be paid out of any money in the hands of my agent, Charles J. Morse, belonging to me and out of any remaining money due me from the US or which may become due me as heir of Richard Campbell, or as heir of Archibald Campbell, or from the residue of annunities due me by the (Sars?) Fox tribes which is provided for in the treaty with them. The balance of estate real and personal to sons Richard Campbell and Vance M. Campbell. To son James M. Campbell, $20 only as he has withdrawn himself from me." Executor: Charles J. Morse, Washington, D. C.; Will was probated 4/27/1838. Witnesses: Benjamin K. Morsell, Sarah Bryan, John D. Clark. Will Book 5, pp. 51-52 (54-65); O.S. 2102; Box 14.
[Note: John's age at death is given as 64, thus making his date of birth 1774. But if he married in 1789, he would have been only 13 years old. This age may have been an error. Perhaps his age at death was actually 74 thus making his dob 1764. His age then when married in 1789 would have been 23 -- a much more realistic figure. But this is merely an educated guess. RGC]
